IS is to donate a number of books and school supplies to the students of AES, many of who are victims of the recent typhoons that hit Manila. Their school is until now an evacuation center for hundreds if not thousands of residents of Muntinlupa City whose homes are still swamped by flood water. A number of these families have students from AES. In spite of the fact that flood waters in the city are only expected to recede by January 2010, this did not stop the AES students and faculty from attending and conducting classes even under these trying circumstances.

Youth for Life Congress 2009

The Institutional Information Office has released the latest edition of Parents First, a digest of articles on parenting. This edition contains highly relevant articles and parenting tips that can help parents, teachers and counselors in guiding children of schooling age. For example, write-ups on "how to choose extra-curricular activities and sports for your children" can be very helpful for parents whose children are considering involvement in these out-of-classroom activities. Then there is also an article that gives advice to parents on how to build their children's self-esteem. Once again, the issue insists on the important role played by fathers in an article entitled "Fathers Are Primary Parents". And what if their children are victims of bullying? This 2009 edition includes a very useful discussion on developing your children's anti-bullying skills and techniques. The series of articles on helping children conquer their fears, shyness and fear of chores will also be very handy for many parents. The collection of write-ups presents an alternative to television watching and video game playing. Entitled "Raising an Avid Reader", this piece gives useful tips on how to encourage children to read. Finally, this edition ends with a timely reminder to parents about the effects of television violence on children.

Copies are available at the I.I.O. Room (2nd flr. Phase I Bldg.) for only P100 each. Orders may be made by calling 807-80-80 local 189 or email southridge@southridge.edu.ph

Working with acclaimed playwright Jeffrey Hatcher, Albom has distilled his mentor's final thesis on life into a powerful and transformative piece for the theater, seamlessly blending Morrie's candid observations about life and death with dashes of his inextinguishable humor.

7/15/2008 - SINGLE-SEX SCHOOLING

Single-Sex The comparative benefits of single-sex and coeducational schooling have been much debated over the past 50 years. The proponents of single-sex education argue that boys and girls have differing needs and that their styles of learning are different. They point to data demonstrating the comparative under-performance of both boys and girls in coed classrooms. Proponents of coeducation argue that mixed education is more in keeping with the mores of modern Western society, and that children from coed schools are better adjusted. Both contend that their own approach is truly
                                                     holistic.
